Big up Bertha - a postcard from Tanzania

I love the energy and infectious enthusiasm of Penny, Annie and Tanya, who comprise Team Honk.  Team Honk is all about bloggers raising money and awareness for Comic Relief.   To celebrate International Women's Day, the three of them are in Tanzania finding out how donations to Sport Relief last year have created female entrepreneurs and 'lasting change' for women, their families and communities and beyond.

Annie sent me a postcard a couple of days ago with a quick update about an entrepreneurial woman she'd just met:

This is a Bertha.  She is a food producer in Dar es Salaam who has received support from the Gatsby Trust.   Bertha makes three different types of wine, garlic paste and a flour used to make porridge.  In addition to making products, she is also now training other women to do the same.   Bertha works from a processing plant that she built herself at the back of her property, with room dedicated to each part of her business.
You can read Tania's full post about her here.

Bertha is such an inspiration - she's cultivating 10 acres at the moment too grow maize and groundnuts so that she doesn't have to buy ingredients and can make more, lower her prices and be more competitive.

  2. Big up Bertha! I love the title of your post! Bertha was brilliant, so friendly and talented.
